Giving Tuesday Helps CORE Give Away Another 150 Computers
December 1, 2020
Giving Tuesday Donations Continue Computer CORE’s Goal of Distributing Free Laptops to All CORE Students Who Needed One
Generous supporters of Computer CORE met Giving Tuesday matching grant of $2,500. Contributions for Giving Tuesday have helped us give away another 150 computers making it possible for another group of CORE’s adult students return to classes and get back to work!
During these twin pandemics of COVID-19 and repeatedly unveiled social inequities, donor assistance to Computer CORE has been a shining light to hundreds of Northern Virginia adults who realize they can no longer delay acquiring fundamental technology skills to support themselves or their children’s online education.
Contributions Deliver Immediate Impact During Pandemic’s Economic Crisis
- Over 300 students are in virtual classes right now learning computer skills and career seeking strategies taught by our dedicated volunteer corps
- Donations were integral factor to CORE’s expanded enrollment – allowing an increase of 300%+ since all CORE classes became virtual and waived the materials fee this past spring
- Donations helped Computer CORE shrink the digital divide to underserved groups by providing free virtual technology classes and free computers to job-seekers
Seventy percent of our students are women and a majority are immigrants from over 97 countries with an average age near 50. Most students had been employed in one or more low-wage job(s) when the pandemic reduced or eliminated their sources of income. During this economic downturn, our motivated students chose to improve their digital and job-seeking skills in Computer CORE’s 30+ online classes.
Donation Dollars Go Far When Contributed to CORE
Computer CORE magnifies the impact of charitable donations through a tiny full-time staff of three who coordinate 75+ volunteers teaching online classes to over 300 students.
Among the donors to the Giving Tuesday campaign were many CORE students, graduates, and volunteers showing their appreciation and support for CORE. Donations were matched by a generous board member dollar for dollar up to $2,500.
